On November 15, 2006, a SeaWorld California trainer was injured when the park’s 18-year-old female killer whale, Orkid, grabbed veteran trainer Brian Rokeach by the foot and pulled him to the bottom of the tank, refusing to release him for an extended period of time.
Only about a dozen of the SeaWorld’s 29 trainers worked with him. Dawn Brancheau was one of them and had more experience with him than most. Tilikum was involved in two previous deaths. He was one of three animals involved in the 1991 death of a trainer. And in 1999, a homeless man’s body was found draped over Tilikum. That man died of hypothermia.
Nov 30, 2006 · If Shamu had intended to really hurt the trainer she would have done so immediately and he would have been dead. She was probably just reminding him who was in charge in the water, something he should have known all along and definitely not something she should be killed for by ignorant human beings.

Shamu is the name used for several SeaWorld orca (killer whale) shows and is the stage name given to the “star” of those shows, beginning with the original Shamu in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
